Notebook grades: We will be grading these on Tues, May 28. Students have been given time in class to put their notebooks in order to be ready to grade them.
Poetry: we will read poems and write some after poetry models. DUE TUESDAY, MAY 28
Study guide for final exam: Students will be given class time to complete this and will be able to use it on the final.
Final exams are June 3 - 4.
TEXTBOOK: We will be using a class set of the literature books, but if students need a copy of the text book at home, one can be checked out to them from the Learning Center.
LITERARY TEXT focus: The focus of our second unit is character.
CCSS: RL 1 Cite the textural evidence that most strongly supports an analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.
RL 3 Analyze how particular lines of dialogue or incidents in a story or drama propel the action, reveal aspects of a character, or provoke a decision.
RL 4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative and connotative meanings;...
RL 6 Analyze how differences in the points of view of the characters and the audience or reader (created through the use of dramatic irony) create such effects as suspense or humor.
RL 9 Analyze how a modern work of fiction draws on themes, patterns of events, or character types from myths, traditional stories ...including describing how the material is rendered new.
INFORMATIONAL TEXT focus: Determine a central idea and analyze its development over the course of the text, including...supporting ideas; provide an objective summary of the text.

RI 5 Analyze in detail the structure of a specific paragraph, including the role of particular sentences in developing and refining a key concept.
RI 6 Determine an author's point of view or purpose and analyze how the author acknowledges and responds to conflicting evidence or viewpoints.
RI 8 Delineate and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, assessing whether the reasoning is sound and the evidence is relevant and sufficient; recognize when irrelevant evidence is introduced.
SPELLING: No more spelling this year
Each student will be given a LATE HOMEWORK PASS per quarter. They may use this pass to receive full credit for one late homework assignment except large, long-term assignments such as book reports. This pass does NOT excuse the homework assignment. Absent work will be graded for full credit.
