TEXTBOOK: We will be using a class set of the literature books, but if students need a copy of the text book at home, one can be checked out to them from the Learning Center.
WRITING: CCSS Conduct short research projects to answer a question. Gather relevant information from print and digital sources....quote or paraphrase the data and conclusions of others while avoiding plagiarism and following a standard format for citation. Draw evidence from literary/informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research.
LITERARY text focus:
POETRY : "The Raven" - narrative poem
RESEARCH PAPER: Most of the work has been done in class. The final draft of the paper is typed at home or in the library if they don't have a computer at home. THIS PAPER IS DUE MONDAY OR TUESDAY DEPENDING WHICH DAY I SEE THE CLASS.
INFORMATIONAL text focus: We will be working on main idea and supporting ideas in text, text structures, treatment and scope of ideas, objective and biased treatment of a subject, broad and limited scope of a subject, and tone.
"All Things Great and Small" excerpt -- comprehension, critical thinking, and vocab questions.
"The Power of Nonviolence" p 489, Assign: test practice and constructed response p 491
"The New Colossus" p 493 Assign: p 495 ques. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
"The First Americans" p 499 Assign: p 502 ques 1, 2, 3
"Coming to America" p 507 Assign: one page summary of the two oral stories, 1/2 page for each girl
Collection 4: Skills Review p 522
"The Wall" -- comprehension, critical thinkg, and vocab questions.
READING LOGS: Due June 1. Students need to read 30 mins a day for 10 days or 300 mins during the three-week period. I'm giving them a form to have signed by their parents or a teacher that they have read this amount of time per day. It will be worth 50 points a week. They may read novels, short stories, magazines, other text books, etc.
INFINITE CAMPUS Grade check: Students need to be checking their grades on Infinite Campus weekly. It's counted as a grade. If they don't know how to sign in, they can see me and I'll help them.
PLEASE REMEMBER I will take late homework the day after it was due for 50% credit but no later. Each student will be given a LATE HOMEWORK PASS per quarter. They may use this pass to receive full credit for one late homework assignment except large, long-term assignments such as book reports. Absent work will be graded for full credit.
